Job Summary

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of what makes a good user experience and design and can provide examples of their work that show this.

The kind of UX/UI design Dan would expect to see an understanding of from the candidate can be seen in guides such as Google Material Design (https://material.io) , Apple flat design. These are simple, sharp, easy to use, easy to understand designs. Below is an example/mock up Dan provided of the sort of thing he is looking for:

The candidate should understand these design concepts and be able design pages and flows following these concepts.

Such designs, while they can be conceptually created in Photoshop, are more practically created in HTML5/CSS3 and javascript. The candidate must be capable of creating the presentation pages in HTML5/CSS3 and javascript regardless of how the initial design is created. This means they must be conversant in HTML5/CSS3 and javascript as well as the various libraries used to create such presentations like Bootstrap/Material for Bootstrap, CSS Grid, Materialize, Angular Material and others.

So the candidate must compliment their design skills with strong, hands-on, HTML5/CSS3 and javascript skills.

The candidate should not be a “marketing” designer. Creation of banners and adds and splash screens is not a positive and could be considered a negative if it is over represented.

The candidate will not be required to interview and research the UX. Dan says as Product manager, he will handle that aspect and communicate what is required to this resource. The resource needs only have the ability to understand and incorporate the UX elements.

The candidate cannot be purely a developer. Beyond the HTML5/CSS3 and javascript and various libraries described above, depth of development experience in C#/Jave/SQL, etc. etc. is unnecessary and does not add value for this role. Developers often use the term “Design” in an ambiguous fashion. A good pre-screen question would be to see if they understand what “Material Design” or “Flat Design” are.

This doesn’t mean someone historically a developer is disqualified, but they do need to be able to show they have a solid grasp and examples of it for the “Design” side.

Hopefully this will be helpful in identifying the right folks to put forward.
